GALLAUDET - THE THIRD GENERATION

1.1.1    ELIZABETH GALLAUDET.  Born abt. 1753.

In either Newport, Rhode Island or New York City.  Married FRANCIS KIRK before 1774, New York City, New York, New York.  Elizabeth first appears in the records at the christening of her son in 1774 at the Presbyterian Church in New York, meaning that Elizabeth could only have been a daughter of John Gallaudet through his first marriage.  The remaining three children were christened at Trinity Church, where rites were typically performed for John’s family.  No further record.  Had children:

1.1.1.1                JAMES KIRK, b. 1774.

1.1.1.2                JOHN KIRK, b. 1779.

1.1.1.3                WILLIAM HUGH KIRK, b. 1781.

1.1.1.4                SAMUEL KIRK, b. 1783.

1.1.2    GEORGE GALLAUDET.  Born abt. 1761.

New York City, New York, New York.  Married 6 Oct 1783, Trinity Church, New York City, New York, New York, CATHERINE CONNOWAY.  Catherine was about seven months pregnant with John at the time of their marriage.  George’s birthdate is based only on a guess of his age at marriage.  If in fact he was older, he was John’s son through his first wife, Hannah, instead of Charity.  Had children:

1.1.2.1                JOHN GALLAUDET, b. 1783

1.1.2.2                CATHERINE GALLAUDET, b. 1785.

1.1.2.3                GEORGE GALLAUDET, b. 1787.

1.4.1   EDGAR GALLAUDET.  Born 12 Dec 1753.

New York City, New York, New York.  Died 10 Sep 1790, New Orleans, Louisiana.  Edgar Gallaudet fought in the Revolution out of New Jersey, like his brother, Peter.  He was an Ensign in Capt. Imlay’s Co., 3rd Battalion, First Establishment, New Jersey Troops, February 7, 1776.  He was a 2nd Lieutenant in Capt. Gifford’s Co., 3rd Battalion, 2nd Establishment, November 29, 1776.  He retired September 26, 1780.  No known wife or children.

1.4.2    PETER WALLACE GALLAUDET.  Born 21 Apr 1756.

New York City, New York, New York.  Died 17 May 1843, Washington, D.C.  Buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.  Married 20 Feb 1787, JANE (JEANNETTE) HOPKINS, daughter of Thomas and Alice (Howard) Hopkins.  Born 1765, Hartford, Connecticut.  Died 20 Nov 1818, New York City, New York, New York.  At ages 17 and 18, Peter lost both of his parents, and apparently moved in with his uncle, Elisha Gallaudet.  Peter relocated with Elisha and his family to Freehold, New Jersey in 1776, as the British prepared to occupy New York City.  When his uncle died in Freehold in 1779, Peter was given his beaver hat, and purchased his coat and westcoat.  Peter fought in the Revolution in the Battle of Trenton in 1776.  He was a private in Lee’s Legion in New Jersey, and has been the source of much confusion as past researchers have repeated the erroneous notion that this Peter Gallaudet was a Colonel, and was another son of Pierre Gallaudet.  Later, Peter became a secretary or personal assistant to George Washington.  After the Revolution, Peter returned to New York, and in 1794 was living with his cousin, Paul Gallaudet, Elisha’s son.  After the passing of his wife, Peter left New York and returned to Philadelphia, where he had lived in the late 1780s and early 1790s.  He was a commission merchant.  In 1824 he became a secretary at the United States Treasury.  In 1835, at the age of 79, he founded a Manual Labor School and Orphan Asylum in Washington.  Had children:

1.4.2.1                THOMAS HOPKINS GALLAUDET, b. 1787.

1.4.2.2                EDGAR GALLAUDET, b. 1789.

1.4.2.3                CHARLES GALLAUDET, b. 1792.

1.4.2.4                (Twins died at birth) GALLAUDET, b. 1793.

1.4.2.5                CATHERINE GALLAUDET, b. 1793.

1.4.2.6                JAMES GALLAUDET, b. 1796.

          1.4.2.7                WILLIAM EDGAR GALLAUDET, b. 1797.

          1.4.2.8                ANN WATTS GALLAUDET, b. 1800.

          1.4.2.9                JANE GALLAUDET, b. 1801.

          1.4.2.10              THEODORE GALLAUDET, b. 1805.

New York City, New York, New York.  Christened at First Presbyterian Church, New York City, New York, New York.  Though his death is not recorded, it seems that this Thomas also died as a child as no record of him later appears.

Kimball.  Had children:

 1.5.3    JUDITH GALLAUDET.  Born 26 Sep 1758

New York City, New York, New York.  Christened 29 Sep 1758, French Reformed Church, New York City, New York, New York.  Married 24 Oct 1790, Trinity Church, New York City, New York, New York, SIMON CROW.  Simon and Judith are shown living in New York with no children in the 1800 census.  Simon was a shoemaker.  No further record.

1.5.4     MARIE GALLAUDET.  Born 24 Jan 1760.

New York City, New York, New York.  Christened 30 Jan 1760, French Reformed Church, New York City, New York, New York.  Died 6 Sep 1853, Eastchester, Westchester, New York.  Buried at St. Paul’s Church, Mount Vernon (formerly Eastchester), Westchester, New York.  Married 1 Jun 1779, SAMUEL PEASE.  Born abt. 1757, of Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersey.  Died 12 May 1814, Eastchester, Westchester, New York.  Buried at St. Paul’s Church, Mount Vernon (formerly Eastchester, New York.  Marie Gallaudet met Samuel Pease when he was a member of the New Jersey militia assigned to fortify New York City in 1776, as the British prepared their invasion and subsequent occupation.  Samuel met Marie at her home, where he may have stayed with other soldiers.  When Elisha moved Marie and the rest of his family to Freehold, New Jersey, she was delighted to learn that Samuel, a Freehold resident, had learned his trade of blacksmithing in the “very neighborhood” where she now lived.  Samuel fought in the Battle of Monmouth, near Freehold, and after the war was made an Ensign in the militia.  Later, Samuel, Marie, and their family moved to Eastchester, New York, presumably to be near Marie’s brother, Joseph, and his family.  Samuel’s grave received a special marker and was dedicated in a ceremony of the D.A.R. in June 2003.  Marie applied for a Revolutionary Soldier’s widow’s pension late in her life, from which we learned much of this history.  It is often said that a “Mary Ann” Gallaudet married Samuel Pease.  This is because that name was recorded on some land documents in New Jersey, ie: “Samuel Pease, Mary Ann Pease.”  In fact, there was only Marie, and no “Mary Ann.”  It seems that “Mary Ann” was a nickname.  Marie’s christening and tombstone both say “Marie,” while her marriage record says “Maria.”  Her sister, Frances, named a daughter “Mary Ann,” as did her brother, Joseph.  Had children:

1.5.4.1                JANE PEASE, b. 1780.

1.5.4.2                ABIGAIL PEASE, b. 1782.

1.5.4.3                JOHN PEASE, b. 1785.

1.5.4.4                PETER ELISHA PEASE, b. 1787.

1.5.4.5                SAMUEL PEASE, JR., b. 1789.

1.5.4.6                WILLIAM PEASE, b. 1794.

1.5.4.7                NANCY PEASE, b. 1796.

1.5.4.8                ELIAS CONOVER PEASE, b. 1801.

1.5.4.9                JONATHAN PEASE, b. abt. 1803.

1.5.4.10              JOSEPH PEASE, b. abt. 1805.

1.5.5     SARA / SARAH GALLAUDET.  Born abt. 1761.

New York City, New York, New York.  Married 7 Mar 1779, Port Richmond, Staten Island, Richmond, New York, SEAMANS DOTY, son of Solomon and Rachel (Seamans) Doty.  Born 7 Aug 1749, Oyster Bay, Queens, New York.  Died bef 1790.  Seamans apparently died young as Sarah is shown as a head of household in the 1790 Census of New York City, living in the “outward” part of the city, as was Paul Gallaudet (below).  We have only a few hints that Sarah was a daughter of Elisha.  Elisha’s daughter, Frances, named a daughter “Sarah.”  Sarah Doty lived in the same “outward” neighborhood in 1790 as Elisha’s son, Paul Gallaudet.  And, the timeline fits.  There remains a possibility, however, that Sarah was a daughter of John, the only other candidate for father based on timeline, but there are no additional clues to support that theory.  If so, it would be odd that Sarah did not marry at Trinity Church, where John’s family traditionally wed.  Nothing further known.  No children.

1.5.6     JOSEPH GALLAUDET.  Born 8 Jan 1763.

New York City, New York, New York.  Died 20 Jun 1816, New Rochelle, Westchester, New York.  Buried at Methodist Cemetery, New Rochelle, Westchester, New York.  Married 1787, ANN BADEAU, daughter of Elias and Miriam Badeau.  Born 13 Aug 1770, New Rochelle, Westchester, New York.  Died 22 Feb 1829, New Rochelle, Westchester, New York.  Buried at Methodist Cemetery, New Rochelle, Westchester, New York.  Joseph Gallaudet was a constable in New Rochelle in 1798.  He later served as a collector, as well.  Had children:

1.5.6.1               PETER ELISHA GALLAUDET, b. 1789.

1.5.6.2                MARY ANN GALLAUDET, b. 1793.

1.5.6.3                MIRIAM / MARIAN GALLAUDET, b. 1796.

1.5.6.4                  ELIZABETH GALLAUDET, b. 1799.

1.5.6.5               WILLIAM PAUL GALLAUDET, b. 1802.

1.5.6.6                AMELIA GALLAUDET, b. 1806.

1.5.7     FRANCES GALLAUDET.  Born abt. 1767.

New York City, New York, New York.  Died 2 Nov 1831.  Married 24 Jan 1793,  JOHNSON KIERSTEAD, son of Samuel (Jr.) and Mary (Johnson) Kierstead.  Born 16 Feb 1760, Jamaica, Queens, New York.  Died 7 Nov 1818.  This name often comes up as “Johnston” Kierstead.  The Kierstead history mistakenly refers to Frances as “Gallandel,” nickname: “Fanny” or “Fannie.”  Johnson Kierstead was a Loyalist during the Revolution and moved with his family to Gagetown, Queens, New Brunswick, Canada.  He later returned with his family to New York.  Had children:

1.5.7.1                HEZEKIAH KIERSTEAD, b. 1793.

1.5.7.2                PETER KIERSTEAD, b. 1795.

1.5.7.5                JASPER KIERSTEAD, b. 1801.

1.5.7.6                JOSEPH KIERSTEAD, b. 1803.

1.5.7.7                MARY ANN KIERSTEAD, b. 1805.

1.5.7.8                SARAH KIERSTEAD, b. 1807.

1.5.8     ELISHA GALLAUDET, JR.  Born abt. 1772.

New York City, New York, New York.  Married _________.  Elisha Gallaudet, Jr. was a cartman, and is listed in the New York City directory of 1800.  In the census of that year, he is given as “Elisha Gallaudt,” often mistaken for “Gallandt,” and was listed immediately after Simon Crow, husband of his sister, Judith, indicating they all lived together.  Elisha is given as being 26 to 45 years old, while his wife was 18 to 26, suggesting he was perhaps a little older than 26, while she was a little younger.  Elisha does not appear in the records before or after that year.  Nothing further known.

1.8.5    DEBORAH OLIVER.  Born 15 Nov 1767, Kent County, Delaware.

1.8.6    THOMAS OLIVER.  Born 23 May 1770.

Kent County, Delaware.  Died 15 Dec 1812, off the coast of Spain.  Married 1791, SARAH AMBROSE.  Born 1771, Virginia.  Died 6 Nov 1845, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Thomas Oliver was a sea captain, in charge of the brig “Nancy and Kate.”  He was lost at sea in a great storm off the coast of Spain.  His son Paul, who was the mate at just sixteen years of age at the time, brought the ship safely back to port.  Thomas was the grandfather of Brigadier General Paul Ambrose Oliver, of Civil War fame, through his son of the same name.  Had children:

1.8.6.1                ELIZA OLIVER, b. 1792.

1.8.6.2                HESTER OLIVER, b. 1794.

1.9.1    ELIZABETH GALLAUDET.  Born abt. 1780,

New York City, New York, New York.  Died in the 1830s, New York City, New York, New York.  Married 24 Dec 1801, Trinity Church, New York City, New York, New York, PETER FAIRCHILD, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Fairchild.  Christened 27 Jul 1783, Jamaica, Queens, New York.  Elizabeth can be identified as a child of Paul Gallaudet, perhaps his only child, by simple elimination.  Starting with the assumption that she was the same age as her husband or less, we know the following: 1) Elisha was dead.  2) John would have been over 60 years old at the birth of this Elizabeth, and already has a daughter of that name.  3) John’s son, George, didn’t marry until 1783, and his children’s christenings from that time are recorded, with none named Elizabeth.  4) Other Gallaudet males were either children or unwed in the early 1780s.  5) Thomas died in 1774, plus all of his children were recorded in his Bible, and does not identify her as one of them.  This leaves Paul Gallaudet, who married Anna Hazard in 1765, as the sole candidate for father.  Had children:

1.9.1.1                 ALEXANDER FAIRCHILD, b. 1802.

1.9.1.2                       PETER FAIRCHILD, b. abt. 1804.

1.9.1.3                 MORTON FAIRCHILD, b. abt. 1807.
