Gallaudet Family History

The Gallaudet's originated on the Island of Belle-Isle off the coast of Brittany, near St. Malo with the oldest record of the name being from the mid 1500s.

In 1711, Pierre Elisee Gallaudet, fled Huguenot persecution in Moze, France and sailed to New Rochelle, New York.

Pierre's mother, Margaret, was from the Prioleau family of French and Venetian nobility and who furnished many devoted clergymen to the Huguenot Church. Margaret's cousin, a Huguenot Pastor in La Rochelle, France also fled the persecution and became the first pastor of the Huguenot church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Special thanks to Scott Fisher from Salt Lake City, Utah (a descendant of Elisha Gallaudet) for all his hours of researching and providing the early family history. Without his help this site would not be as complete.
